I live in a town where Hemingway once lived – Loitokitok which he refered as Laitokitok at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Never met him though I have heard man fond memories of him particularly his marksmanship and also quite friendly. I have read the Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Green Hills of Africa and True at first light; very moving stories and discriptions I have managed to follow and find them very true. It is as if this area has not changed socially even though much destruction of nature has resulted in scenes deprived of the beauty he was lucky to have lived through. Its not easy for me to express but it is an experience one has to live that can inform one what inspired the True At First Light. Lovely works.

I just happened to stumble across this post while looking for a pic of the Jane Austen Book Club. I have read the book and watched the movie and LOVE the movie. I actually found the end (the last 5-7 minutes) on youtube.com and watch it lots…I am totally obsessed with the end! LOL!

The main thing about the iceberg technique is that a literary text never only means what you can read in letters. The pragmatic aspect is important. There are words or sentences which are plurivalent. They don’t have only one meaning but severals which always depends on the content. Moreover adjectives and adverbs are able to create an atmosphere and to express emotions. The reader gets headwords, uses his fantasy and creates his own imaginary scene according to the lines.
And Hemingway said that a reader merely needs the minmal number of informations of a story to create the whole picture in his head. That’s the iceberg technique.
So if you write a story using the iceberg technique, you won’t describe every detail but you’ll allow the reader great latitude to use his own fantasy.

it’s a very thin describtion of the iceberg technique. I would wish there were some text examples just to make it esier to understand the term.

@ Christina: I know that there are only two (i guess it wasn’t more) factories in Germany which produce those gym wheels. So I guess it’s much harder to get one in other countries. And it won’t work at the beach – you need a solid floor like asphalt. Moreover it’s made of steal so it’s not a lightweight, it can be rolled by one person but it can merely be carried by two persons.
